Mardi Gras Indians to Build Casino on
Lower 9th Ward Tribal Lands

Today’s official notification to the Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs was a long-expected formality, the culmination of three years of behind-the-scenes work to unite the tribes after the death of Allison “Tootie” Montana in 2005 and the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
“The tragedies and challenges of life on the reservation are well-documented,” said Chief Theodore “Bo” Dollis of the Wild Magnolias tribe.
“Poor access to education, high rates of alcoholism, limited economic opportunities–our tribes deserve better. And tribal gaming can help us do it.”
“It’s about recovery,” he added.
Representatives from all of the 38 Tribes of the Mardi Gras Indian were on hand to unveil architectural plans and artists renderings of the planned development.
The casino resort complex will be anchored at St. Claude Avenue and Delery Street, just upriver from Jackson Barracks. It will house more than 10,000 slot machines, 200 table games, 800 guest rooms, 7 restaurants, 4 spas, and 2 theaters.
“We think this facility can attract some top chefs and musical acts to the Lower 9th Ward for the first time,” said lead architect David Childs of Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, New York.

Originally born here in N.O., we four are American Indians on the Otoe-Missouri rolls. (I’m the last one still down here, returning since Katrina) Anyway, I sent the story to the sister and brothers. Don’t nobody know what satire means??? My brother even got my mama in on the deal. Originally from here, here’s what she says on the subject:

Ok gang… Here is the scoop from mom.
The Mardi Gras Indians started as a group of Black Democrats who met at
The Choctaw Club, a black bar room where they met to do political
business and what ever.
Beings they could not participate in the existing Mardi Gras clubs they
formed their own, just as Zulu did. And the rest is history… or
something like it.
It seems likely beings they had been doing the Jazz Funerals.
Mom says one year it rained so hard on Mardi Gras Day Rex and the rest
of the crews did not roll, so the Truck Crew Orleans said “we will roll”
and Zulu lined up behind them. That was how Zulu got to parade on Canal
Street.
