KENNER, Louisiana — Presumptive Republican Party presidential nominee John McCain could have chosen anywhere in the world as a backdrop for his first official speech of the 2008 general election campaign.

He chose Kenner.

We’ve all heard of Hollywood South, but now there’s a new game in town: Welcome to Washington South.

In the few short months since the election of trailblazing Kenner-American (and potential Vice-Presidential candidate) Bobby Jindal as Governor of Louisiana, this little-known incorporated hamlet within Jefferson Parish has become a hotbed of national politics.

Now established Beltway institutions in the government, the media, and the military-industrial complex are starting to take notice.

National polling orgnization Zogby just moved into brand-new offices on Williams Boulevard, around the corner from respected newsgatherer USA Today’s brand new Kenner Bureau on West Esplanade.

And noted lobbying firm Quinn Gillespie & Associates, LLC is the just latest addition to a stretch of Loyola Avenue so filled with lobbyists that powerbrokers are calling it “Little K Street,” a reference to the infludence-peddling neighborhood in Washington, D.C.

“It’s all happened so quickly,” said noted local political analyst and pollster Silas Lee. “I make a living predicting political moves and I never saw this coming.”

But while Kenner’s moment in the political spotlight may have surprised some, not all were caught unawares.

“You see, you see the thing is, I saw this coming from miles ago,” said famed political mind and Louisiana native James Carville.

“It’s close to the airport; it’s close to good food, booze, and hookers; and, like Washington D.C., it’s built entirely upon the shifty silt of a reclaimed swamp.”
